Behind the Scenes: How CBD Oil is Made
If you are on this page, you have heard that CBD oil is becoming very popular due to its potential benefits such as helping with post-workout recovery, promoting better rest, and promoting calm and focus.* Today, hemp-derived CBD oil products are popping up everywhere, with options to ingest, apply topically, and even to use in cooking. But, unless you know exactly how CBD oil is made and whether or not it’s a quality product and a good choice for you, you are probably feeling hesitant to give it a try. Don’t worry, we have all of the information you need to understand just how CBD oil is made and why you should consider making part of your everyday routine right here in this post.
Where Does CBD Oil Come From?
CBD oil is extracted using one of several methods from the flowers and leaves of the hemp plant. The hemp plant is one of two species of the Cannabis Sativa plant and contains less than 0.3% of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), making it federally legal in the United States. As you probably guessed already, the other species of the Cannabis Sativa plant is marijuana, which contains enough THC to get you high and is legal only in select states.
What Happens After Extraction?
Once the CBD oil is extracted from the hemp plant, it is considered “full spectrum”, meaning that it retains trace amounts of THC (less than 0.3%) and contains a combination of cannabinoids, terpenes, and other beneficial compounds. While many prefer full spectrum CBD oil, others prefer broad spectrum CBD oil, which also contains a combination of cannabinoids, terpenes, and other beneficial compounds but has all traces of THC removed. It can also be turned into CBD isolate, which contains only pure CBD and no cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, or THC. So, the oil is left as full spectrum or turned into a broad spectrum oil or CBD isolate - then it’s mixed with other ingredients to create the various types of CBD products available today.
All Maddyn products contain full or broad spectrum CBD oil produced by a clean and safe extraction method. The extraction process retains the beneficial compounds of hemp such as minor cannabinoids and terpenes naturally produced by the cannabis plant. We do not use harsh solvents in our extraction process. Our lab reports are available for review and to ensure that our products do not contain contaminants, heavy metals, or fungicides. We encourage you to read more about our Farm to Life Standard.
And Now...the TLDR Version
- CBD is a cannabinoid found in the hemp plant. CBD oil is extracted from the aerial parts (flowers and stems) of the hemp plant.
- Once extracted, it’s either left as what’s called “full spectrum” CBD oil with a combination of cannabinoids, terpenes, and other beneficial compounds with trace, but legal, amounts of THC or turned into broad spectrum CBD oil with all traces of THC removed or CBD isolate, which contains only pure CBD and no cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids or THC.
- Then, the CBD oil is mixed with other ingredients to create one of the many products available today.
So, now that you know how CBD oil is made and used in products, you can feel confident that it’s plant-based, natural, and safe. To ease your mind even further when shopping for CBD products, we suggest you only shop with brands that are completely transparent about their processes, the ingredients they use, and their lab reports (which should always be done by a third party). At Maddyn, we believe that this level of transparency is key, which is why we make all of this information available on our website. Plus, every Maddyn product package lists all ingredients and contains a QR code linking to the most current lab report.
